A BRIEF HISTORY ABOUT...

...THE LIBRARY
The Srečko Vilhar public library is the heir of the old Civic library of Koper. The Civic library was founded in 1851. During the winter 1893/94 the library moved into the Tacco palace, (today the seat of the Regional museum) and was left in the custodian of prof. Francesco Majer. During the guidance of prof.Majer the library was enriched with the most valuable books. During the second world war the old city archiv and a lot of works of art and a part of the Civic library were evacuated from Koper. In 1951 the library moved again, this time in its actual place, the Brutti palace. In 1979 the library was named by the revolucionar, publicist and slovene bibliothecar Srecko Vilhar.

...THE BROLO SQUARE
The library stands in the Brolo square . The square is typical for Venetian urbanized areas. Before the construction of the town's square it was the junction of the main traffic routes coming from the south-east suburb of the island, the site of the oldest harbours. The square is bounded by a number of important buildings.

...THE PALACE
The library stands in the Bruti Palace . The palace was built in 1714 by the Italian architect Giorgio Massari. The palace was built in the typical Italian classical style. The central part of the front is marcated by the portal in the ground-floor and the balcony and the windows in the second-floor (the Piano Nobile). Serials of reliefs on biblic motives are located under the tympans of the windows.
